I usually ignore college letters- they often end up in the recycling bin without even passing through me, but recently I received a letter from Yale University. Now, I've never considered myself Ivy League material. But I thought about it long and hard...and I came to the conclusion that, well, why not? What makes me think that I have absolutely no chance of getting in to Yale? I came up with a few setbacks, but everybody has those. I mean, it really doesn't hurt to try. In the worst case scenario, I don't get accepted to Yale but become a stronger candidate for many, many fantastic colleges.
All weekend I was obsessing about Yale and I found out some pretty cool information in the process. 1. Yale has need-blind admissions, which means they don't consider your ability to pay in the selection process. 2. Financial aid is need-based, and Yale and other Ivy's have a deeper pocket for financial aid than most private colleges or public universities. This means that going to Yale might be cheaper than going to say, Duke, a private non-Ivy school. Students who have a family income of under $65, 000 a year don't have to pay at all for Yale tuition. Students with family incomes in the range of $65,000-$200,000 a year can have over half of their tuition paid for, and in return are expected to work 8-10 hours a week at Yale, where the minimum wage is $12 an hour. 3. Yale allows you to "shop for classes." There is a ten-day period in which upcoming freshmen can sit in on lectures and lessons without having to make a commitment to one class or another. Then students sift through the giant "blue book" of classes and advisors help them pick and choose.
So...I think I'm going to apply when that time rolls around. Wish me luck! Crossing my fingers that my SAT scores will be as high as I'm hoping for. I'll find those out on March 28th.
